Physical Education Rules and Expectations

It is my philosophy of Physical Education to stress effort as means to a successful Physical Education experience. In the elementary grades, developing skills, sportsmanship and confidence is my focus. In middle school, the focus is to improve strength, endurance, and skill. This is all accomplished through giving your best effort. Below are my expectations for all Physical Education students.

Grading Policy:
Students are not strictly graded on their athletic ability. As stated above, the major emphasis in class will be participation. Listed below is the breakdown of my grading policy.
-         Daily Effort: 50% of the student’s grade. Daily Effort is everything that occurs during physical education class. This includes attitude, sportsmanship, and cooperation as well. The student will be given daily participation grades ranging from 0-10.
-         Sports Skills: 20% (Grades 6-8) 25% (Grades 3-5) of the student’s grade. This is evaluated based on how well the student performs on the skills for their age. This could also include written tests or skills tests.
-         Social Skills: 20% (Grades 6-8) 25% (Grades 3-5) of the student’s grade. Sportsmanship means treating everyone in class, including the instructor, respectfully.
All Grades: Please have a pair of shoes that are kept at school and are used for Physical Education only. This is especially important in the fall and spring when mud is often brought into the gym by unchanged shoes. A muddy floor becomes very slippery and dangerous. You will not be allowed to participate with muddy shoes and you will receive a 0 for the day.
-        Clothing: (Grades 6-8 only) 10%. The expectation is that you bring your physical education clothes every day. Not bringing your clothes will reduce your daily grade 50% and your overall grade by 1% each time you forget, but you still be allowed to participate as long as you have gym shoes. Gym Clothes are a T-shirt, athletic shorts, sweatshirt, sweatpants, athletic pants, socks, and tennis shoes. (No jean shorts)

Lockers

-         It is your responsibility to lock your physical education locker correctly. You are responsible if your belongings are missing or damaged because you didn't correctly lock your locker.

-         If another student does not lock their locker correctly it is expected that every other student leaves their belongings alone.

Injuries: need to be reported to Mr. Erickson immediately. When an injury occurs, the class will need to sit and wait until it is safe to resume class.

If unable to participate in class due to an injury or sickness, a note needs to be written by a doctor explaining the injury and the approximate return date. If the student expects to sit out for only one day a note from a parent/guardian is sufficient.

Other Information:
-If you missed class, check with Mr. Erickson to see what was missed so you can get caught up.
-If you plan to practice or play in a sport later that day, you must still participate in P.E. that day.
-Let Mr. Erickson know if you break any equipment so that I may replace it. Accidents happen.
-When needed, students will help put up, take down, or transport equipment.
